Short Course - What Kalman could not anticipate
Rudolf E. Kálmán formulated the Kalman filter in the 1960s, and his filter was quite a success and used, among others, during the Apollo program. However, it was based on a linear state space model and could not find an application outside the realm of linear systems despite the efforts to find formulations, like the extended Kalman filter, aimed at handling non-linearities. Until computers became more powerful and Evensen proposed the ensemble Kalman filter to circumvent the pitfalls of previous formulations. And then Emerick proposed the ensemble smoother with multiple data assimilation focusing on the solution of inverse problems for highly non-linear systems. This short course will work through the different filters and discuss their potential for data assimilation and inverse modeling with hands-on examples using open-source software.
Short course fee: 75€ and 50€ for students (Limited to 30 participants)

Short Course – Interpolating CO2 emissions with sequential Gaussian simulations: potentialities and challenges

Sequential Gaussian simulations have been used worldwide in the last 20 years to interpolate and estimate total CO2 emissions, especially in volcanic environments. This workshop aims to review the concepts and criteria associated to the application of the sGS. Applicants will be able to work with real data acquired in the Azorean volcanic systems in order to discuss its potentialities, uncertainties and limitations (for example, lack of spatial correlation, data cluster, irregular grids). Comparison with other interpolation methods will also be done.

Workshops
Workshop – Machine Learning applied to geosciences and mining

This workshop, tailored for geostatisticians, geologists, engineers, and resource estimation professionals in general, offers a holistic blend of theory and hands-on practice. Focusing on clustering, classification and regression techniques, participants will engage in practical exercises utilizing Python programming and Isatis.neo software. These exercises centered around defining estimation domains and constructing classification and regression models will show real illustration cases.
The workshop will show the integration of Python and geostatistical software, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between programming and geostatistical analysis. Attendees will gain not only theoretical insights but also practical skills, which will enable them to implement machine learning techniques in their own projects. By the end of the activity, we hope that the participants will possess an understanding of the strategic role that machine learning can have in refining resource modelling.
Workshop fee: 100€ and 60€ for students (Limited to 20 participants).
